Polarity Therapy - The Air Circuit

Polarity Therapy approaches the body from the vantage point of the chakra system, the association of the four elements of fire, earth, air, and water to the chakras, and the idea that energy flows between (+) and (-) poles.

In particular, the lower four chakras relate to our 'real world' manifestation and have a specific charge and spin, created by the flow of the Pingala and Ida.  Each of these chakras are affiliated with a different charge and a different element.

From these centers, lines of energy flow throughout the body, connecting seemingly disparate parts of the body in circuits comprised of three areas with different polarity.  If there is a blockage in a chakra or in the flow of energy from or to that chakra, we experience this as discomfort -- if not outright pain!   Sometimes where we feel the pain is not where the pain is originating.  Often it can be coming from another area, or if the chakra itself is having some trouble, maybe the whole circuit is lighting up.  Understanding where these circuits are and what they relate to provides answers and allows for some elegant solutions.

The Specifics:

With the Air Circuit, the energy of the Heart Chakra radiates outward and runs the length of the body just a little ways out from the midline.  This channel of energy connects with an upper, middle, and lower region, as well as the index fingers and the second toes.  The upper portions of the body are considered positive, the middle areas neutral, and the lower portions negative.  For the Air Circuit, the parts of the circuit are:

  • (+) shoulders/lungs  (Gemini)
  • (0) colon/kidneys  (Libra)
  • (-) calves/ankles  (Aquarius)

This same pattern repeats in the index finger and the second toes.  The tips correlate to the (+) pole, the middle phalanges to the (0) pole, and the base to the (-) pole.  When energy has been off for a long while, the toes will be more involved, whereas more transient situations will be indicated in the fingers.

In practical terms, what does this mean?

The Technique:

For anything having to do with your shoulders, lungs, colon, kidneys, calves, or ankles -- massage* your index fingers!  for good measure, massage your second toes.  Where you find the tender spots indicates particular areas of congestion.

Another easy way to access this circuit is through the calves and ankles.  This can help with indigestion and tired shoulders, as well as helping out the claves and ankles.  You can try squeezing, jiggling, 'digging in,' of simply holding them.

Releasing the shoulders will facilitate flow of energy in the lungs, colon, kidneys, calves, and ankles.  This is a little harder to do for oneself, however, you can use a little bit of self Ortho-bionomy to slightly exaggerate any stuck areas.  To do this, press into the stuck area a little bit and count to about sixty.  You'll know is the right angle of pressing when it feels best, even before it's released.  Then after your count of sixty, hopefully it will have released and you'll have greater range of motion.  Another approach could be to use a tennis ball leaning into a wall.  Using Feldenkrais, you could do an exploration of movement coupled with breathing.  A Bowen technique used on the trapezium can be helpful, too.  Of course, if you've got a knowledgeable partner handy, get them involved!

Putting your hands on any two of the circuit locations will facilitate flow.   Muscle checking or using a pendulum can assist with determining which two.   If that's not an option, simply moving through different combinations works as well.  For instance, any of these would be good:

  • cross your arms and contact the top of your shoulder blades (if you do this while walking, you will be benefiting from a gentle (+) contact*)
  • cross your arms and connect with your lungs through your ribcage by intention
  • cross your arms behind you and contact the kidney area (this can be easier leaning into a chair to help hold the hands on the area)
  • put one hand behind you on a kidney area and the other hand in similar spot in front of the body
  • put one hand on the shoulder and the other on the kidney (experiment with different hands on top)
  • cross your arms and hold your calves and/or ankles, same leg or on different legs
  • hold on either side of a calf / ankle
  • put one hand on a kidney and the other hand on a calf (experiment with different hand positions and different kidney/calf combinations)
  • any combination you can think of is game!

Some yoga postures are also very effective.  As with all yoga postures, use caution!!!  The correct level of stretch in a yoga posture is the stretch that feels good to start with and then disappears in sixty seconds -- because the muscle was not overtaxed and simply lengthened.  One of my favorites for opening the heart and lifting the shoulder blades off of the body is to lace the fingers behind you and lift the hands and arms away from the body.  If you're standing up, this starts out with moving the hands towards a spot on the floor by your heels and then progressively moving the spot further and further away and then up off the floor.  When you get fairly flexible, you can hinge at the hips, rest the rib cage on the thighs, and let gravity bring the hands over your head.

Try some of it!  See how it goes.  If you're finding anything in particular that doesn't seem to be shifting, there are more tailored approaches that can be useful.  You can reach me through email (lynn@satoriconnections.com) or by leaving a phone message. (512.869.7903)

Footnote about massage: In polarity therapy, there are three levels of contact.  Since you're at home doing this on your own, I recommend you go for comfort.  This may not be what someone doing polarity therapy would do, but they would have a better idea of what to do that is correct.  They will have studied this.  If you haven't studied it, be kind to yourself first.  No self-harm.

Books

I love books! These top three books help explain some about Resonance Repatterning® and PSYCH-KTM.  I have reviews of and comments about more books with links into Amazon in my original 'Bookstore' as well as a bigger but less verbose Amazon eStore.  Whenever I do online group Resonance Repatterning® series, I include books I've referenced in the resources sections for that series.
