Plant Spirit Medicine
Elliot Cowan

Here's an absolutely fabulous book that illustrates the Chinese elements beautifully and explains how to contact the Plants directly.

Elliot Cowan presents a very humorous and human account of his journey in becoming a shaman. This is blended into his knowledge of Chinese Medicine.

The examples he gives are informative and heart-warming and this has been a life changing read for me.  Although my words here are short, let me say this is the book I recommend the most often.

The Unquiet Dead
Dr Edith Fiore

Before I read this book, I knew of folks who believed in possession. After reading this book, I now believe in possession as a 'working hypothesis' and can recognize it's effects in my life and others. I can now view this situation with compassion and practicality, instead of fear, and that enables me to see it for what it is and work with it. Results can be quick and profoundly beneficial.

This is not about demonic possession - this is about folks who left thier bodies and got stuck here on earth, then decided to chum around with some embodied folks. This isn't exactly beneficial to either person.

This book is wonderfully written. She tells you what topic she's going to cover, she covers it, she summarizes it at the end.

Her attitude towards possession is wonderfully and scientifically open - she doesn't claim it does or does not exist, only that as a working hypothesis, it provides relief for her clients.

The examples she gives make this a very understandable circumstance - both in how it affects peoples lives when left untreated, how the treatment proceeds, and how wonderful people can respond afterward.

Rather than proclaiming this a 'expert's only' area, she provides examples of what she does and also a typical script for what she does which can be read to tape and replayed.

She does caution that she is not dealing with demons, and that this is another field which is best left to the experts. If, however, you are plagued with mystery symptoms which had a sudden onset and are not responding to the usual western medical treatments, this book may provide some answers and, ultimately, lead you to a place of relief.

In my own practice I have seen profound and beneficial changes when "guests" have been given escort to better arrangements.

Soul Retrieval : Mending the Fragmented Self
by Sandra Ingerman

This is another book which widened my horizons.

The 'working hypothesis' is: During traumatic experiences, the soul detaches from the body. This can be a little bit, or a lot. When the soul feels that the harm has passed, it will come back to the body. Sometimes, though, with a large enough 'hunk' of the soul missing, it's hard to know there's a problem.

I experienced such a split when I had a C-Section for my son. At the time, I only knew something happened. One moment I was hysterical, and the next, I was deadly calm.

Some symptoms of Soul Splitting are vagueness, spaciness, losing things (like memories), and a general inability to move forward in life. The nature of the symptoms are such that you may be aware there is a problem yet unable to do anything about it, or you may not be aware there is a problem, simply experiencing a vague glimmer of unease all the time. I was seriously concerned I was developing early onset Alzheimer's.

Saundra Ingermans's book describes the shamanic method for soul retrieval. This is definitely a skill which can not be transferred through a book. What I did get from this book was a practical sense of how common soul splintering can occur, and this has heightened my appreciation of it. This is also a good read.
