Do You Know Your own Personality Type?

In Know You, Know Your Horse: An Intimate Look at Human and Horse Personalities, Know You, Know Your Horse: An Intimate Look at Human and Horse Personalities: Identifying "Types" and Matchmaking to Ensure Long-Term RelationshipsEunice Rush and Marry Morrow provide a little quiz with which you can identify your preferred pattern of behavior based on the traits of sidedness (left-brain / right-brain) and re-charge preference (introvert / extrovert.)  The two continuums can be combined to create four personality types.  Eunice and Marry refer to these as Analysts (LBI), Powerfuls (LBE), Mediators (RBI), and Advocates (RBE). This, in turn, helps you figure out which type of horse would be best for you.  O, wouldn't that be grand?!

What surprised me, after taking the quiz, is that I ended up with a possible Z-pattern.   When you get one of these, you can be either (a) really well balanced -or- (b) seriously stressed out.  (!)   And here's the funny part - if you're seriously stressed out, would you even know it?

Even when you're not seriously stressed out, if something is annoying you, you might begin to journey along your Z-pattern.  It is a path of defense someone will take when they perceive they are not being recognized for who they are.

EX: You've a Mediator (RBI) but someone is approaching you as a Powerful.  (LBE)  They're talking to by presenting lots of facts, being prompt and direct with your answers, and getting straight to the point.  Since you're a Mediator this is a bit annoying!  You might start out caring and friendly but, when your small talk gets brushed off, you push back!  You stop showing interest, stop being inquisitive, maybe even get a little aggressive.  You've started the Z movement from Mediator to Advocate, moving from an introverted tendency to 'ask' to an extroverted tendency to 'tell.' If the person speaking with you doesn't cotton on, you'll continue along the path to Analyst, perhaps getting rather quiet while you mentally tear apart what they're saying.   If, heaven help them, they really missed the boat, you will now move fully into the Powerful persona and it's game on.

Here's a chart of how to recognize the Z-patterns.

Analysts (LBI) Powerfuls (LBE) Mediators (RBI) Advocates (RBE)
take time to collect all the details and have all the facts.  ask rather than tell.  avoid making decisions because they may not have all the facts. high-energy, tell more than ask.  if they get involved with detail, it's in order to control the project. avoid making decisions because they don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. extreme high energy.  most extroverted.  if they get involved with detail, it's because they're very passionate about the topic.

Under extreme stress, a Left Brain Introvert (LBI) becomes a Right Brain Extrovert (RBE).

Under extreme stress, a Left Brain Extrovert (LBE) becomes a Right Brain Introvert (RBI).

Under extreme stress, a Right Brain Introvert (RBI) becomes a Left Brain Extrovert (LBE).

Under extreme stress, a Right Brain Extrovert (RBE) becomes a Left Brain Introvert (LBI).

When an Analyst is 'forced' into her "Z" pattern, she will first go from
  • Analyst to Powerful (both Left Brain but Introvert to Extrovert),
  • then to Mediator (Left to Right Brain and Extrovert back to Introvert)
  • and finally to Advocate (crossing all boundaries).

This means that a Left Brain Introvert (LBI) becomes a Right Brain Extrovert (RBE) under extreme stress.

When an Powerful is 'forced' into her "Z" pattern, she will first go from
  • Powerful to Analyst (both Left Brain but Extrovert to Introvert),
  • then to Advocate (Left to Right Brain and Introvert back to Extrovert)
  • and finally to Mediator (crossing all boundaries).

This means that a Left Brain Extrovert (LBE) becomes a Right Brain Introvert (RBI) under extreme stress.

When a Mediator is 'forced' into her "Z" pattern, she will first go from
  • Mediator to Advocate (both Right Brain but Introvert to Extrovert),
  • then to Analyst (Right to Left Brain and Extrovert back to Introvert)
  • and finally to Powerful (crossing all boundaries).

This means that a Right Brain Introvert (RBI) becomes a Left Brain Extrovert (LBE) under extreme stress.

When an Advocate is 'forced' into her "Z" pattern, she will first go from
  • Advocate to Mediator (both Left Brain but Extrovert to Introvert),
  • then to Powerful (Right to Left Brain)
  • and finally to Analyst (crossing all boundaries).

This means that a Right Brain Extrovert (RBE) becomes a Left Brain Introvert (LBI) under extreme stress.

When your Advocate score is close to your Analyst score it could mean:
  • You are an Analyst under stress
  • You are a fairly balanced Analyst
  • You are an Analyst that has had to become an Advocate because of your job function or another outside influence.
When your Mediator score is close to your Powerful score it could mean:
  • You are an Powerful under stress
  • You are a fairly balanced Powerful
  • You are an Powerful that has had to become an Mediator because of your job function or another outside influence.
When your Mediator score is close to your Powerful score it could mean:
  • You are a Mediator under stress
  • You are a fairly balanced Mediator
  • You are a Mediator that has had to become a Powerful because of your job function or another outside influence.
When your Analyst score is close to your Advocate score it could mean:
  • You are an Advocate under stress
  • You are a fairly balanced Advocate
  • You are an Advocate that has had to become an Analyst because of your job function or another outside influence.
When an Analyst has:
  •  a low score in Powerful
  • slightly higher score in Mediator
  • and almost equal in Advocate

you could be in the process of stressing.

When a Powerful has:
  •  a low score in Analyst
  • slightly higher score in Advocate
  • and almost equal in Mediator

you could be in the process of stressing.

When a Mediator has:
  • a low score in Advocate
  • slightly higher score in Analyst
  • and almost equal in Powerful

you could be in the process of stressing.

When an Advocate has:
  • a low score in Mediator
  • slightly higher score in Powerful
  • and almost equal in Analyst

you could be in the process of stressing.

"The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn, the bird waits in the egg, and in the highest vision of the soul a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of realities."
