Here's a thought from Hijacked by Your Brain: How to Free Yourself When Stress Takes Over:
Only, let's be honest, sometimes the 'instant summary' is a little too 'instant!' If you have been triggered by something in your environment, the next thing your mind does is to create a mental "headline" to explain why you are alarmed. Very often you're in 'react' mode before you're even aware you're doing anything -- which might could put you in even more of an alarming situation! And then you're dealing with that and the original content of the message gets lost in the action.
With this kind of information, you can consciously take action that is in alignment with the messages you are (perhaps unconsciously) getting. Rather than hoping the situation will resolve with 'time' or 'on its own,' you can do something that is in alignment with what is good for you. If you try to ignore or stifle the uncomfortable sensations of these messages, a common approach, usually taken because it seems like the situation can't change, this would only raise the alarm higher or leave you in an alarming situation longer. This way, you can zero in on what is troubling and take action to alleviate what is creating the message - and get to a better place faster!
